The Ecumenical Witness of the ELCJHL

The Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jordan & the Holy Land (ELCJHL) works closely with the other Christian churches in the Holy Land and the Middle East, to interpret the difficult and often tense circumstances of daily life in Israel and Palestine.

The Patriarchs and Bishops in the Holy Land have affirmed together that Jerusalem is a city to be shared by two peoples (Israelis and Palestinians) and three religious faiths (Jews, Muslims and Christians).

The church has played a creative role in the Middle East Council of Churches and the Fellowship of Middle East Evangelical Churches. Anglican and Lutheran churches, especially in Ramallah and Jerusalem, are committed to cooperation, including occasional joint services of worship. The ELCJHL also is an active participant in the Lutheran World Federation.

Leaders of the ELCJHL are helping people in many parts of the world to see that peace in the Middle East will come when the people of Palestine have a national homeland on their native soil, and that freedom of worship and of conscience is a human right that belongs to all individuals and religious communities in the Holy Land.

Pastors Mitri Raheb and Jadallah Shihadeh, together with Bishop Younan and others are frequent interpreters of the Palestinian reality in Europe and the United States. The early years of the new century are especially important as the peace process reaches a most critical stage and as a new Palestinian state emerges.
