About our Project

The schools of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jordan and the Holy Land have been providing excellent education for students in Palestinian communities since 1851 - regardless of gender, race, religion, or ability to pay. Our schools teach English from Kindergarten through the 12th grade, equipping students for dialogue with international partners and expanding their opportunities for college and careers. Through the ELCJHL Libraries Project: Opening a World of Possibilities, we invite you to accompany teachers in the Holy Land as they build libraries that foster a love of language and learning right from the start.

How it Works

Okay, this explanation may seem a bit confusing, but that's what happens when you invite lots of people to be involved! But it goes something like this...

English teachers from the ELCJHL schools compile lists of their favorite books
Volunteers from the ELCJHL Director of Education Office input the books to the ELCJHL Libraries Project Amazon Store
Individuals, families, classes, and congregations like YOU visit our bookstore online and buy books!
Books are shipped to Wartburg Theological Seminary where volunteers unpack, sort, and store the books
From Wartburg, our ELCJHL Director of Education Office works with individuals and groups visiting the Holy Land, inviting them carry the books to one of our schools and meet our students and teachers!
And finally, after the books have made their way through all of YOUR hands, they begin their journey in earnest with the students of the ELCJHL Schools!

That's what we call 'pretty handy'!

Ideas and Imagination

We think this project could work in just about any situation, but in case you're looking for some ideas, how about these?

Congregational Leaders:
- Use the ELCJHL Libraries Project as part of your congregation's Advent preparations
- Incorporate the ELCJHL Libraries Project into your congregation's Lenten practices
- Encourage each member of your congregation to bring a new book to donate on Rally Day
Teachers:
- Learning about the Middle East? Why not learn about the ELCJHL, too. Scroll down to find accompanying study materials you can use to help your kids learn how much your students have in common with our students in the Holy Land
- Contact the Director of Education Office of the ELCJHL at communication@elcjhl.org to establish a partnership with one of our classrooms or schools
Families and Friends:
- Do you or your child have a favorite book? Go online and see if it's one that our teachers are requesting and give it as a gift
- Looking for a unique birthday or celebratory gift? Why not give a book to the ELCJHL Libraries Project in honor of the celebration
